It was not the birthday gift I was expecting nor the birthday gift I necessarily wanted, but it was the birthday gift that I desperately needed! On my 64th birthday, my sister and brother-in-love gave me a Way of Life Fitness gift certificate to cover the cost of five fitness sessions. I had three options 1) re-gift the certificate; 2) let it collect dust on my desk; or 3) use it. After prayerful contemplation, I decided to use it. Admitting to myself that over the years of life’s ups and downs and emotional setbacks, I found myself significantly overweight with high blood pressure and threats of a second knee replacement if I did not take responsibility for my own health! Praise God for loving and caring family members!
One of the first assignments I was given, by my trainer Saleem, was to journal what I ate for two weeks, including meals and snacks. Of course, I was hesitant and somewhat embarrassed, but I trusted that it was part of the process. Suffice to say, the document was not a shining example of “healthy” eating! When I completed the assignment, I gave it to Saleem, and I will never forget what he said, “My grandson would love this!” It was at this point that I was reminded of a Bible verse, 1 Corinthians 13:11, “When I was a child…I thought as a child, but when I became a man (woman) I put away childish things.” In other words, I realized that I was making childlike decisions when it came to my fitness and food choices, choosing the easy, the greasy and the sugary. I found this realization to be unacceptable for a 64-year-old woman! When Saleem gave me some “suggested” food options as part of the strength training and fitness program, gradually, I was able to make some changes.
All I can say is, my birthday gift of five fitness sessions has evolved into a journey. A journey, in partnership with Saleem and Way of Life Fitness, that has led to the loss of 60 lbs., suspension of high blood pressure medication, several pounds of pressure off my knees, lower cholesterol levels, and other health benefits. Not to mention the ability to do the little things like…picking up my grandson, unloading groceries, walking up a flight of stairs, standing in line without leg pain, comfortably closing a jacket, and having the energy to take a walk! This year the journey continues as I reached my 65th birthday.
As the Chinese Proverb says…"The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step".
A single step that will strengthen mind, body, and spirit. ---

First, I would like to thank Way of Life Fitness for their support with a regular workout plan for continued strength and health.
Prior to coming to Way of Life Fitness, I was 40-50 pounds overweight and my blood pressure was out of control. In my introductory workout, Saleem gave me a series of exercises to ascertain my fitness level. Needless to say, I failed miserably. At that point I had nothing to lose so I decided to give strength training a try. That was 10 year ago. With Saleem’s help and encouragement, I have lost over 40 pounds and my blood pressure is in a normal range. I have adopted a plant based diet and am enjoying great health. I am so glad that I made the decision to workout with Way of Life Fitness.

I have been a part of the Way of Fitness family (Wolf Pack) since 2010.
I have lost over 25 lbs., while increasing strength and muscle mass every year. At 69 years old I am as strong as ever.
Thanks, Saleem, for challenging and motivating me so I can perform at such a high level at work and play.
I am looking forward to the next 10 years. I am in this for life!
